This Is What Happens When You Walk Everyday

Walking on a daily basis boosts your energy levels

How often have you woken up feeling sluggish, reached for the coffee and a carbohydrate fuelled breakfast only to feel even more sluggish a couple of hours later? The body turns carbohydrates into their constituent parts – sugars – when it breaks them down during digestion, which is a great thing for boosting energy levels – but only on short term basis.

Then we reach the 11 am coffee break and we need more sugar, then in the afternoon we struggle with the 3pm slump where a chocolate bar perks us up and then we’re so exhausted from this up and down energy cycle that we grab the nearest takeaway menu or ready meal for dinner, before collapsing into bed, only to repeat the same things all over again the next day.

But what if we could break the cycle, with something really simple, like, walking…? Brisk walking gets the heart pumping and that means that oxygen rich blood is pumped around the body more quickly, making us feel more energised. It also helps to increase levels of the energising hormones cortisol and adrenalin. Making a point to walk regularly means that your body will be more energised more of the time, and you’ll feel less sluggish and less likely to compensate by eating sugary, energy sapping, snacks.
